Remove your Boots!

“Please remove your shoes before coming inside”. You might have heard someone ask you this as they struggle to keep salt stains from spreading onto the floor. Salt crystals can act like sandpaper underfoot, dulling a floor's surface or damaging a finish. And once the surface is damaged, the underlying materials can be damaged or stained by water and other foreign matter that soaks in.

Road salt trapped in the treads of your shoes also leaves behind unsightly white residue on your floors – check out these helpful tips.

Act Quickly

  • Remove moisture that may contain salt. Use a mop, or an old rag.
  • To pick up salt that's dried onto floors without scratching the finish, spray the floor with 1 part water to 1/4 part vinegar.
  • Let the liquid sit for a minute or two.
  • Wipe it up with a dry towel or a clean mop.

An oz of Prevention

  • Get rid of as much snow/salt off your boots OUTSIDE.
  • put a few mats down in the entrance way.
  • Keep wet boots on the mats or in trays.
